Here in Pacific Beach, the holiday season doesn’t arrive with a blizzard; it arrives with a golden sunset and a slight crispness in the ocean air that gives you just enough excuse to wear your favorite sweater. It’s a “Relaxed Coastal Escape” in the truest sense. You trade the slush for surf, and the frantic schedule for a slow-sipping cocktail by the fire.

Here is how our families do the holidays in San Diego—and how you can too.

Super Saturday: The Best Day in PB (And You Don’t Need a Car)

If you can, try to time your stay for the second Saturday in December. Around here, the neighborhood essentially shuts down for a massive celebration. The best part for our guests? You can experience the whole day without ever opening a ride-share app. Everything is just a short walk or bike ride from the hotel.

The energy starts early with the San Diego Santa Run. Even if you aren’t running, grabbing a coffee and watching thousands of Santas take over Garnet Avenue is a spectacle you have to see to believe. It’s silly, it’s fun, and it’s quintessentially PB.

By early afternoon, that energy shifts into the Pacific Beach Holiday Parade. This isn’t a massive, corporate production—it’s our community on display. It feels nostalgic and warmly welcoming, the kind of parade where you wave to the people on the floats and they actually wave back.

As the sun sets, the focus often shifts to the water for the Mission Bay Parade of Lights. Our tip? Skip the traffic and crowds of the big bay downtown. Instead, walk down to the bay side of PB with a blanket. Watching the decorated boats glide across the calm water is the perfect, low-stress way to cap off the day.

A Local’s Night Out: Balboa Park & The “Secret” Garden

While we love staying local, we always make one special trip to Balboa Park to see the big city lights. It’s only a short drive from the hotel, and we have a specific routine that avoids the biggest crowds and maximizes the magic.

We usually head down in the late afternoon to hit Jungle Bells at the San Diego Zoo. The zoo transforms at night—there’s music, lights, and a totally different vibe than the daytime.

But here is our personal “Confidently Boutique” secret: After the zoo, we don’t just wander aimlessly. We head straight to Panama 66 in the Balboa Park Sculpture Garden.

Many people don’t realize that you can grab a local craft beer or a glass of wine from the restaurant and take it right out into the open-air sculpture garden. Sitting there with a drink in hand, surrounded by art and looking up at the California Tower glowing against the night sky? That, to us, is peak San Diego. It’s refined but totally unpretentious.

The Magic of Crystal Pier

Of course, you don’t need an event to feel the spirit. Sometime during your stay, take a walk down to Crystal Pier at sunset. Seeing the Christmas tree lit up at the end of the pier, hovering over the crashing waves with the La Jolla coastline in the distance, is a memory that sticks with you.
